“Has the soul of an Old World wine, but the charm of the New World” – Wine Worth Writing About – Tapanappa Whalebone Vineyard Merlot Cabernet Franc 2019

Source: Wine Worth Writing About
Review Date: Jun 2024

Deep red ruby with a finely woven and complex nose of violets, orange zest, macerated strawberry and dried cherry tomato, black fruits, fig leaf, mint tea, savoury undergrowth, tobacco, cedar and crushed gravel minerality.

In the mouth it’s juicy, but tightly structured, tense and textured dry with firm tannins. Lovely ripe and concentrated dark fruit echo the nose, along with some slightly bittersweet anise, savoury herbals and sweet spice. An undercurrent of acidity carries it all with confidence, while an old world savoury mineral quality draws you into the serious side of this beauty. The hallmarks are there for long cellaring and ends with an encore of sweet spice and dark fruit. This has the soul of an Old World wine, but the charm of the New World and is a must for lovers of the right bank!
