Tapanappa 2021 Whalebone Vineyard Blend is faintly translucent with a bright purple red hue. The aroma is immediately of mulberry juice, cassis and macerated cherries with the faintly herbal characteristic of the Cabernets from a cool vintage. The wine’s flavour is intense and fresh with a core of sweet fruit and a fine-grained tannin finish.
This is an elegant wine of intensity and finesse with a long ageing potential and “is a pure reflection of the unique Whalebone Vineyard terroir.”
2021 was a model vintage at Tapanappa’s Whalebone Vineyard.
The heat summation of 1468°C-days was just less than the average of 1480°C-days and the true to average rainfall, evenly spread across the growing season.
The Merlot was harvested on the 24th of March and the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were picked on the 10th of April. The Shiraz was from the Shining Rock Vineyard at Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills.
The fruit from the 7.8 hectares of old vines at the Whalebone Vineyard were handpicked and delivered to the Tapanappa Winery in the Piccadilly Valley.
The grapes were destemmed, roller crushed and chilled to 2°C. Each variety was fermented separately in 0.9 tonne tubs, and hand plunged each day during the 21 day fermentation on skins.
The sugar dry wines were pressed from the skins and gravitated immediately to barrique to undergo malo-lactic fermentation.
At the finish of malo-lactic fermentation, the wines were racked off gross lees and returned to the French oak barriques (50% new) to complete 18 months of ageing in oak.
Each variety was clear racked from barrique at the end of 2022.
The Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz were blended together to create the 2021 Whalebone Vineyard Wrattonbully Blend, following on from the small quantity of the 2020 Whalebone Blend.
The wine was bottled in November of 2022.
